Atlanta photos have now been posted!
Post-event:
Team Unlimited had a great run at the Atlanta FTC World
Championships! Our robot's performance was great through the finals -
undefeated, with ranking points that kept us in first place on Edison for 4
rounds, until the Power Surge alliance scored over 200 ranking points in a round
to displace us. In the elimination rounds, we captained the second place
alliance, together with the MITiBots (FTC 2875 from Lexington MA) and Polar Bear
Robotics (FTC 27 from North York, Ontario Canada). Unfortunately, due to a
failure in the Team Unlimited controlling computer, our alliance was eliminated
quickly by the eventual winning alliance (RoboRaiders, Jr. Bomb Squad and
Alberta Longhorns).
For our veteran team founders, this was a last hurrah, one
last tremendous World Championship experience before they all graduate and move
on to their colleges this year. For the rookie squad, this was a first
experience in what we hope will be an illustrious continuation of Team Unlimited
into the future!
Our two other Sharon FTC teams were participating in the World
Championships as well, the AngelBots (FTC 120) and the Myotonics (FTC 512).
They both performed with their usual skill and gracious professionalism, on the
field and off. They also have many graduating seniors, so our inter-team
dinner on Wednesday evening was particularly bitter-sweet.
The FTC futures forum that we moderated went well -
results have been posted!
Many photos are now available - our
coach volunteered as the FTC photographer, and all teams are hopefully represented
in the images.
We were thrilled to be recognized at the FTC Award ceremony in
the Grand Ballroom at the Omni Hotel with a Judges Award - the "Unlimited
Potential " award.
The Inspire Award was presented to Einstein's Daughters - FTC
32 from San Diego CA - a very accomplished girl's team. The Winning
Alliance was led by the RoboRaiders (FTC 679 from Sandy Springs GA), along with
Jr. Bomb Squad (FTC 92 from Mountain Home AR) and the Alberta Longhorns (FTC
2820 from Calgary, Alberta Canada).

Pre-event - from FIRST HQ:
What's up, World Championship teams?? You made it! We're 2
weeks away from the biggest FTC event of the year. Can you feel the
excitement???
This will be one of the most insanely fun events you will ever attend, but there
are a few things you need to know beforehand so that you can have as much fun as
possible and not be blindsided by anything. Please, please read the following
information, as well as the attached packet.
If you have questions, ASK! Not on a random forum, ask US! That's what FTC staff
is here for, to help you have the best experience possible.
1. The World
Championship information pack is attached and needs to be read in its
entirety! The FMS changes that were recently announced are included in this
packet. READ IT.
2. The general
team schedule for April 15-17 (still subject to change) is attached. We will
not be sending match schedules out to teams before the event. You will receive a
team list late next week.
3. There will be two divisions competing at World to ensure that every team has
a chance to play multiple matches. However, these divisions, Edison and
Franklin, will be random and will eventually play each other in the Finals.
This does not mean that there will be two sets of judged awards or two sets of
Winning Alliances. Think of it like the NFL, as in during the Super Bowl the
best of the AFC plays the best of the NFC. For the FTC World Championship
Finals, the best of Franklin will play the best of Edison. The same logic goes
for the judged awards, that the best of each division is competing for one set
of awards.
4. We will be opening the pit area on Wednesday afternoon this year for
_*mandatory*_ check-in, inspection, and judging. Pits will open at 3 pm.
This is a change from last year, so be aware when making travel plans.
5. Please continue to check the TSA website to learn of any updates on their
policies for remote controls, etc being taken aboard airplanes.
The website is:
http://www.tsa.gov/press/releases/2007/press_release_10012007.shtm.
6. Please make sure your team has read the Game Manual and checked the Q&A on
the FIRST forums before World. We will be adhering strictly to those game rules
and guidelines at the event.
7. The template for Robot C, NXT-G, and LabVIEW can be downloaded from
www.ftctraining.com. The current version of the Field Management System can also
be downloaded there.
8. Unlike last year's World Championship, the FTC Pits will be in Building C
this year, between the FRC and FLL Pits. Pit space will be 10' x 10' with one 6'
or 8' table (all pits will be the same). Chairs will not be provided due to
space limitations.
9. Inspire Award winners should send one member of their team to Gate C of the
dome at 7:15am on Friday for the Robot Parade. Robot participation is invited
but not required.
10. Just a reminder that the sixth annual FIRST Robotics Conference, sponsored
by CIA, Rolls-Royce, and WPI, will take place April 15-16,
2009 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta in conjunction with the
FIRST Championship. Individual and group passes will be available for purchase
at a reduced rate until 1 April only.
The /FIRST/ Robotics Conference is designed for current and potential members of
the FIRST Community, as well as those interested in FIRST topics, to learn more
about a wide variety of technical and non-technical topics associated with
FIRST, technology, engineering, outreach, education, and much more. A diverse
group of speakers are lined up to share their knowledge and expertise with
attendees. Anyone and everyone is welcome to attend; we really hope you'll join
us!
This year's Conference will begin on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30PM and will run
all day Thursday (8AM-8PM). It will include over 35 different presentations and
topics of interest for all programs.
